Scissor Sisters

Featured because I bought it secondhand today for the bargain price of just £1!  Issued on Polydor in 2004, this is the edition with two bonus tracks (‘The Skins’ and ‘Get It, Get It’). Of course I didn’t buy it for those – I bought it for the hits!

While I actively hate manufactured pop acts, I enjoy the brash, authentic, commercial pop-rock/disco  of the Scissor Sisters. Perhaps it’s something about the energy of New York (which also spawned Blondie and Talking Heads – two other bands which could do ‘pop with attitude’), perhaps it’s the cheerful raunchy sexuality, but either way, it’s great, well-produced entertainment.

Covering Pink Floyd’s  ‘Comfortably Numb’ was a smart move to get noticed but it’s the Jake Shears/Babydaddy songs that are at the heart of this collection.  If you call them Sellards and Hoffman, the pairing almost has a ‘Lennon and McCartney’ quality to it!  ‘Take Your Mama’ and ‘Filthy/Gorgeous (co-written with Ana Matronic) are simply classic songs – and ‘Laura’ and ‘Mary’ aren’t far behind.

And the price made my day!

Bargain! This was one of the first bands I ever saw live- at the King’s Hall in Belfast. They are great fun and certainly know how to spin out a catchy tune! Hope you’re well x
